Epididymal Cyst
What is it?
Epididymal cysts are fluid-filled cysts that come from the epididymis, and are very common. They are often discovered when about the size of a pea, they feel slightly separate from the top of the testis. These lumps can slowly increase in size and can feel like a third testis. Epididymal cysts can happen at any age and should be left alone when still small, but can be removed with surgery if they become larger.

Treatment for an epididymal cyst:
Treatment for this procedure is done under a general anaesthetic. After you are asleep, the surgeon will shave the scrotum and an incision will be made into the skin over the cyst. The cyst is removed and the cut is stitched up. The cyst and the fluid will be examined in the laboratory. Your operation may be done as a day case. This means that you come into hospital on the day of the operation and go home the same day.
Prior to your operation.
You will be required to fast for this procedure, normally 6 hrs prior to your procedure.
Please discuss with your Doctor before the procedure if you are taking Aspirin, Warfarin, Plavix or Arthritis medication and any other blood thinning medication.
After the procedure.
You will be sent home with advice from nursing staff on how to manage your dressing. Continue to wear supportive underwear. Please note that your sutures will dissolve.
Please notify us or present to the Emergency Department at John Flynn Hospital if:
- Wound becomes red, swollen +/- pus oozing from the wound
- High fevers, shivering, shaking
- You have severe pain not relieved by prescribed medication
